Korean Phone Call Phrases: 여보세요 and Beyond

Why 여보세요 Exists
여보세요 comes from 여기 보세요 — "look here" — an attention-getter from the era when phone lines were unreliable and you genuinely needed to check someone was there. It survives purely as the phone-opening ritual, which is why using it face-to-face sounds so strange: it's not a greeting, it's a "are you receiving me?"
The Reality: Koreans Barely Call
Everyday Korean communication runs overwhelmingly on 카카오톡 (KakaoTalk) text messages — unannounced voice calls between younger Koreans can even read as slightly urgent or formal. Mistake #1 — Greeting someone in person with 여보세요
Phone only. In person it sounds like you're checking whether their ears work.
